Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is the jewel of the Adriatic according to Lawrence Durrell. Wait, let me show you. I'll be right back as I climb the steps, oh there are so many steps in this city, to our eating area overlooking the city and the sea, and take a picture. Pretty spectacular. Yesterday, we walked the walls around the old city. I would show you those amazing pictures but I took them with my Nikon camera. Who walks around with an I Pad taking pictures? I've taken over the role of hunter, gatherer. In the morning and after our morning swim I climb up the 72 stairs (Ann counted each one) and walk to the local grocer to buy breakfast and lunch. I started this routine on our last trip to Crete and Ann thinks I should continue it. I buy a loaf of fresh bread, slices of cheese and salami, fresh fruit, a liter of natural water, and yogurt. There's no Rice Krispies in Dubrovnik. This is also the best way to learn the local language. I can count up to 20, ask for bread, say please and thank you, hello and good bye. If you try, they will come. The surly check out clerk is now very helpful and pleasant because I'm trying to use her language. I'm amazed at how many English speaking people there are in Dubrovnik. Brits, Scottish, Irish, Australian, and loud Americans, especially college aged. Did I make such a scene when I was here on an exchange program in 1976? Just shut up already, we know you own the world, or think you do. Ann and I did meet a lovely couple at dinner last night. He was from Scotland and she's from Australia. They are on their honeymoon. In Dubrovnik, as in Venice, restaurants are everywhere, and if they are located down an alleyway the tables are right next to each other. Let me use the analogy of an elevator. In an elevator you usually don't talk to the person standing next to you. You look straight ahead and hope your arms don't touch their body. Talking is out of the question. I've found in Europe this analogy doesn't apply sitting outside in close quarters at a restaurant. At least as long as you speak the same language. Let me put a plug in for the restaurant, it's called Lucin Kantun, they serve small plate food and it was excellent. I had the lamb and asparagus and the Aussie kitty corner to me had the squid stuffed with smoked ham. The cheese cake is also amazing. Anyway we started talking and it lasted through the whole meal. They are both into cycling, actually he rode professionally for a few years, so we initially had something in common. They are going to Crete next so we recommended places and things to do. We've had great luck with restaurants on this trip. We're going to try fish tonight. We're off to ride the cable car to the top of Mt. Sard where there is a great view of Dubrovnik.
